Arlington Reservoir Dam Project

Weston & Sampson received a 2006 Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) for our work rehabilitating the Reservoir Dam in Arlington, Massachusetts.

The Arlington Reservoir Dam Rehabilitation project had been postponed for several years due to financial constraints and opposition of residents adamant that the forested landscape and habitat of this popular recreational site remain unchanged. The project was revived in 2002 and included an appealing solution to tree removal for residents. Using innovative technology, Weston & Sampson designed a vertical interlocking steel sheetpile wall capped with a reinforced concrete beam (I-Wall) for installation along the length of the dam.

The I-Wall solution is a “win-win” with its resistance to breaching failure and reduction in dam seepage, thereby protecting downtown Arlington, and the aesthetic value of the site preserved, thereby sustaining the natural environment. Without the I-Wall, thousands of trees would have been destroyed, leaving a barren embankment with rock covered slopes extending the entire length of the reservoir – all within an active residential neighborhood.
