Our 1996 American Consulting Engineers Council of New England (ACEC/NE) recognition was for the design of a highly successful groundwater recovery and treatment system for the combined remediation of two plumes contaminated by BTEX and chloroform. Weston & Sampson performed three-dimensional groundwater modeling to determine where and how many recovery wells to install, and to evaluate the capture zone. We modified the treatment system to handle a larger volume of flow based on both BTEX and chloroform treatment.
Because of the complexity and urgency of the project, effective coordination and control by Weston & Sampson was critical. This project proved to be an excellent example of private and public sector synergy. The commitment of Barnstable County and Weston & Sampson to improve the quality of life in this project area led these groups to cooperatively and successfully mitigate a serious threat to public health.
