Wilmington's Butters Row Water Treatment Plant

The American Consulting Engineers Council of New England (ACEC/NE) recognized Weston & Sampson with their 1982 Grand Conceptor award for our design of the Butters Row Water Treatment Plant in Wilmington, Massachusetts. Weston & Sampson designed a conventional treatment plant for four large gravel-packed wells that contained high concentrations of iron and manganese. However, just prior to soliciting bids, we discovered significant concentrations of trichloroeythlene (TCE) in three of the four supply wells. Due to the flexibility of our original design, we were able to make modifications in the aeration and filtration systems to allow for the complete removal of the TCE.

The construction cost for the revised plant increased by only 1.5 percent of the total project cost. The plant has several innovative features and has continually provided excellent water to its consumers.
