Weston & Sampson is providing final design services for the replacement of a structurally deficient bridge that spans 80’-6” over the Blackstone River in Sutton, Massachusetts, as part of a master service agreement with MassDOT.
The proposed bridge will be a steel plate girder with concrete deck spanning 102 and will be supported on new concrete stub abutments located behind the existing concrete abutments. The new stub abutments will be supported on micro piles and the existing concrete abutments will remain and act as scour protection. The bridge construction will require the temporary relocation and support of gas, water, and sewer utilities. The project also involved:
- Highway design and traffic management plans for construction. Special coordination for traffic management of businesses abutting the bridge was performed as well.
- Geotechnical services consisting of planning and overseeing the program of borings and probes, preparation of boring logs, and preparation of a geotechnical report providing foundation and earthwork construction recommendations as well as geotechnical design parameters.
- Wetland flagging and environmental permitting assistance to MassDOT’s Environmental Section which included providing required permit documentation for the US Army Corps of Engineers and MassDEP.
- Public engagement involved attending and presenting the scope of the project at a design public hearing for the Town of Sutton and the Town of Grafton since part of the project limits are within the Town of Grafton.
Project is scheduled to be advertised by MassDOT in the winter of 2023.
