Design of Biogas System

Anaerobic Digester Design

Weston & Sampson provided process and gas handling design, as well as overall project management for the design and permitting of a 1.0 megawatt (MW) agricultural digester at dairy farm in Maine. The farm is a 1,000 dairy that will co-digest up to 30,000 gallons of cow manure with off-site food waste substrates to create methane for power generation.

The project included an innovative digester design, as well as a solids separator building with loading area for recovery of animal bedding materials. Structures include two 65-foot diameter digesters, two 18-foot diameter substrate receiving tanks, a power/heat recovery building, and manure force main and digested manure return line with a brook crossing.

Weston & Sampson also compiled and submitted a Maine Solid Waste Processing Facility permit application on behalf of the client. This facility is the first of its kind in the State of Maine.

This project was funded through the USDA Rural Development Renewable Energy Program.
