Permitting and Design for Electrical Substation in a Residential Area

The electrical substation located on Bird Road in East Mansfield, Massachusetts is powered by National Grid on a one-acre site in a residential area.  Weston & Sampson worked closely with the Town of Mansfield’s Electrical Department and the project’s power consultant to design and build a facility to mitigate concerns related to aesthetics, sound transference, electrical safety, and impacts to wildlife.

Weston & Sampson’s responsibilities included:

  • Assisting the town through the permitting process.
  • Designing a non-climbable perimeter site retaining wall intended to provide both security and safety.
  • Implementing colorized precast concrete elements and stamped concrete into the wall.
  • Proving the detail and design for all site grading and drainage that interface with the adjacent neighborhood and subdivision.
  • Designing the landscaping and planting plan, along with the appropriate detailing.
  • Adding a permeable paver access driveway.
  • Providing construction assistance and oversight, including attendance at weekly meetings.
