McCabe Park

The City of Waltham Parks and Recreation Department secured the design services of Weston & Sampson for the redevelopment of Monsignor McCabe Park. The defunct wading pool, though only 1.5 feet deep, posed a staffing and operational burden that was not sustainable by the city. In addition, the existing play equipment was reaching the end of its useful life, the tennis and basketball courts were in disrepair, and the park lacked overall organization for pedestrian safety and maintenance vehicle access.

In collaboration with the district’s political leaders, the community and the adjacent school, Weston & Sampson’s landscape architects created a revised master plan that took advantage of the park’s assets and minimized safety and operational challenges. The new park plan includes multi-generational program, a completely accessible neighborhood playground, splash pad, tennis and basketball courts, as well as baseball batting cages and spectator seating to support the active little league of Warrendale.

Site infrastructure was designed by Weston & Sampson’s civil and structural engineers to comply with the city’s requirements for the splash pad to discharge into the sewer in the summer when used by bathers and to the storm drainage in the winter when only receiving run-off from rain and snow.

The renovated park is now a resource for the community as a city-wide little league destination and first class neighborhood playground that serves not only residents, but the adjacent school as a well-utilized and much-needed resource.
