Brewery Wastewater Permitting and Pre-Treatment
Lawson’s Finest Liquids, a small family-owned craft brewery, decided to construct a 20,000-barrel-per-year (bbl/yr) commercial brewery in Waitsfield, Vermont, to expand production of its beers. Weston & Sampson worked with Lawson’s Finest Liquids to develop a site-specific wastewater pre-treatment system that would treat wastewater from the new brewery to comply with state and local regulations. Wastewater generated by the facility contained high levels of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS).
Weston & Sampson designed a two-stage biological pre-treatment system to reduce the levels of these contaminants to be equivalent with domestic wastewater prior to being discharged to the Winter Park treatment and disposal system, a large decentralized treatment system with subsurface effluent disposal. Other work included the installation of automated flow and pH monitoring facilities to allow for more consistent and efficient monitoring. A detailed process control description and SCADA specification package was developed as part of this project; and was designed and sourced internally.
This project received a 2020 Special Project Merit Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Vermont (ACEC of Vermont). ACEC of Vermont’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) competition recognizes outstanding achievements in engineering projects completed in Vermont.
