LID Designs for New Department of Public Works
Weston & Sampson was retained by the Town of Weston for the design of a new consolidated Department of Public Works (DPW) facility to include space for DPW Administration, Engineering, Highway Division, Parks & Cemetery Division and Water Division. Building components include office areas, employee facilities, vehicle maintenance, division workshops, interior vehicle/equipment storage, vehicle wash and canopy storage.
The project included the demolition of the existing 1950s DPW facility and the construction of a new 41,000 square foot facility. Site features include a new stormwater management system, parking, fueling facility, septic system, bulk material storage bins, and canopy storage provisions.
The project was designed to meet LEED Certified standards including:
- Low Impact Development (LID)
- Rainwater harvesting
- Heat recovery units
- Day-lighting to occupied areas
- Highly reflective roof (heat island reduction)
- Super-insulation
- Geothermal system
- Vehicle wash reclaim system
Work included the preparation of a Basis of Design document for use by an independent building commissioning agent.
Weston & Sampson’s services for the project included preparing the initial programming documents, preparing completed design documents for public bidding, providing bidding services including prequalification of contractors, and providing construction administration services. Key design and construction administration services provided and/or administered by Weston & Sampson include stormwater design and permitting, as well as the incorporation of LID designs, including rain gardens and infiltration basins.
