DPW Planning, Design, and Construction – Medford, MA

Weston & Sampson was selected to provide comprehensive planning, design, and construction administration services for a new Department of Public Works Facility, located at the City Yard.

The new facility included the construction of a new 44,000 square foot facility to consolidate the public works operations, the wire division, weights and measures, and maintenance of all city vehicles and equipment into a single facility. The facility includes offices, employee facilities, workshops, vehicle maintenance, wash bay, vehicle fueling system, and vehicle and equipment storage. The project also included the construction of a relocated fueling facility, salt storage structure, bulk material storage area, and a resident recycling area.

The design of the facility incorporated many sustainable design features, including:

  • Structural capacity to support future photovoltaic panel on roof
  • Day-lighting via translucent wall panels
  • Passive ventilation systems in vehicle/equipment storage areas
  • Rainwater harvesting to serve DPW operation’s needs (e.g., street sweepers)
  • Stormwater recharge of the aquifer
  • High-efficiency boilers
  • Heat-recovery equipment in heating/ventilation systems
  • Super-insulated factory fabricated wall panels (three inches thick)
  • Massachusetts “Stretch” Energy Code compliant
  • Waste oil burner in vehicle/equipment storage areas
  • Low-water usage plumbing fixtures
  • Occupancy sensors to control artificial lighting
  • Interior and exterior low-energy usage lighting (e.g., LED)
  • White roof membrane to reflect summer heat energy

As part of the construction administration phase, we were responsible for weekly meetings, shop drawings, Requests for Information (RFIs), payment requisitions, change order reviews, sketch revisions, periodic observations by all disciplines, etc.).
