In early 2016, Weston & Sampson (formerly MA Engineering Consultants, Inc.) was selected by NCDOT Division 14 to prepare designs to improve Broadpointe Drive (SR 1690) in Henderson County, North Carolina.
Weston & Sampson developed alternatives to improve safety and to accommodate rapidly increasing traffic volumes due to industrial development along this road. Various non-standard solutions were investigated in order to select an alternative that would provide adequate capacity and allow for future thoroughfare improvements planned in the area. In addition to the roadway improvements, Bridge No. 107 over McDowell Creek was replaced.
Weston & Sampson provided utility coordination, roadway design (including right of way, horizontal and vertical alignments, and final construction plans), and hydraulic design (including drainage design, bridge hydraulic design, a FEMA/MOA no-rise study, erosion and sediment control, and permit drawings). As the project was federally funded, Weston & Sampson also prepared Programmatic Categorical Exclusion in accordance with NEPA.
Weston & Sampson complied with NCDOT’s request to accelerate the project schedule and the time from notice-to-proceed to construction letting was 13 months.
