New Public Works Facility – Yarmouth, MA

Programming, Design and Construction Administration for New DPW Facility

Weston & Sampson prepared a feasibility study and site selection analysis for a new public works facility. Work included preparing a space needs assessment for the DPW operations and conducting a comprehensive evaluation to determine the viability of the existing site for the new public works facility. Based on a favorable outcome, the town decided to move forward with the new facility at that location. Weston & Sampson assisted the town with obtaining approval from the town to fund the new facility.

The project includes a 39,000 square foot facility for DPW Administration, Highway, Vehicle Maintenance and Buildings & Grounds. The facilities were designed with the following key program types: office / office support space; employee facilities (locker/shower/toilet/break and training): trade shops; vehicle maintenance; vehicle wash: and vehicle and equipment storage areas. The facility will also incorporate sustainable design elements, including natural daylighting, heat recovery, smart lighting controls, and a solar-ready roof (the town is already designing a roof solar system for the facility).

Heating for the facility is provided by a 2 million BTH high-efficiency, gas-fired, condensing boiler plant. Cooling for the administration wing is a high-efficiency, split DX condensing unit supplying and 6,000 CFM indoor VAV air handler. The vehicle maintenance bays are heated by a hot-water radiant floor heating system, ventilated by a 9,000 CFM heat recovery unit and supported by dedicated vehicle exhaust system and high-volume low speed ceiling fans. The shops and vehicle storage are heated and ventilated by dedicated hot water heating and ventilating units. The vehicle maintenance, vehicle storage areas and shops are protected with a CO/ NO gas detection system which initiates an automatic purge and/or alarm upon detection of noxious gases. The entire facility’s HVAC system is controlled by a webbased DDC building management system.
