Stoneham Town Center
Weston & Sampson assisted the Town of Stoneham in the design and construction of a new Town Common and the refurbishment of streets surrounding the Common and Stoneham Town Hall. The Common Committee’s goal was to create space that is attractive and pleasant to pass through while creating a comfortable environment for the public. At the same time, the new Common needed to accommodate a wide range of civic events including Town Day, evening concerts, farmer’s market, and other similar activities.
The revitalized Town Common includes a series of paths, lawns, plantings, and furnishings with an emphasis on establishing new gathering spaces with views to significant structures located nearby. New linkages were established to major downtown attractions. The open decorative fence identified along Main Street creates a strong and attractive edge to the Common, directing pedestrians to the two main entrances, while helping to protect and preserve the amenities located within the Common itself.
Work also included the generation of traffic counts, parking studies, origin and destination studies, and additional traffic analysis to support the redesign of Central Street and other minor streets that define the Common. Work within the roadway corridors included new storm drainage systems, curbs, sidewalks, roadway surfaces, tree plantings, pedestrian accommodations, and traffic calming measures.
