“Development of a Groundwater Supply as Protection from Drought Impacts”
FRANK GETCHELL, P.G., Senior Technical Leader – Water, Weston & Sampson, presents with MARTHA SILKS, P.G., Senior Hydrogeologist, Leonard Rice Engineers, Inc.
The continued occurrence of precipitation extremes can render utilities and industries that rely on sole sources of water vulnerable to long-term interruptions in capacity and quality consistency. In order to minimize such impacts to surface water supply users, groundwater can be a possible option. This presentation will describe the efforts taken by a large industrial user of municipal surface-water to develop an alternative groundwater supply for use during droughts which meets the necessary yield and quality requirements.

“PFAS: Emergency Response and Emergency Planning”
BLAKE MARTIN, Vice President, Weston & Sampson
Representation of PFAS as the "forever" chemical and the excessive press coverage has led to both emergency response planning and emergency treatment implementation. This case study examines the costs and benefits of three different emergency treatment responses at the former Fort Devens base versus the economic considerations of emergency response plans being developed concurrently by Cumberland, Rhode Island and Sudbury, Massachusetts. Choices made in each case have long-term ramifications for system optimization amidst rapidly changing technologies.
