Session 10 - Water Resources
2:30 PM — “Predictive Model Supports Reservoir Management, Water Conservation, and Cross Connection Decision-Making”
Andrew Walker, PH, CFM, Hydrologist, Weston & Sampson, Portsmouth, NH and Kenneth Yu, Project Engineer, Weston & Sampson, Reading, MA, and FRED WALLACE, Utilities Director, Town of Salem, Salem, NH
Weston & Sampson developed a dynamic reservoir model for one New Hampshire community’s primary drinking water supply to forecast future reservoir levels several months in advance, based on current conditions, allowing them to prepare for and potentially avoid drought-induced low reservoir issues. Key model components include correlation with nearby hydrologic and meteorologic datasets and the ability to compare the benefit of demand management and regional connection purchases on reservoir levels against the loss of revenue/additional cost of those mitigation strategies.

Session 19 - Cross Connections
2:15 PM — “Keep Your Eye on the Gauge”
John Bocchino, Vice President, Weston & Sampson, Reading, MA, and RUSSELL TIERNEY, Managing Director / Superintendent, Weir River Water System, Hingham, MA
This presentation will explain the significance of the differential test kit gauge readings and reactions when testing Reduced Pressure Principle Device Assemblies (RPZ), Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA) and Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB) utilizing the NEWWA backflow test procedures. Frequently testers question the test results they are witnessing on the differential test kit gauge and may not understand why and what are the next steps. The presentation will utilize various visuals of the NEWWA training curriculum and videos. We suggest that cross connection technicians and management staff of private and public water and wastewater systems attend this session.
