Pump Station Design for Flood Areas

Pump Station Preliminary Design in Coastal Flood Areas of Saugus

Weston & Sampson has provided a wide range of engineering services to the Town of Saugus, including sewer pump station evaluation, design and construction of repair and replacement work. We completed a complete review of all town pump stations, including a capital improvement plan (CIP) to help the town prioritize repairs. Saugus’ location on the coast with many sewer areas being low-lying along the coastal marsh subjects several areas to coastal flooding. These concerns have grown in recent years with climate change considerations, including the implementation of new higher flood elevations in many areas by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Among the stations we evaluated, two that are located directly in flood zone areas were selected for preliminary design evaluation – the Morris PS and the Bristow PS. Our team completed survey and mapping tasks, and evaluation of exposure of the stations based on elevation of equipment, as well as access considerations. We completed a preliminary design report to help the town formalize decision making on much-needed improvements to these pump stations. The Bristow PS site evaluation includes coordination with playground/park improvements within the flood zone area.
