Steel Bridge Rehabilitation

Design of Replacement Continuous Steel Superstructure

Weston & Sampson was responsible for the design of a replacement continuous steel superstructure utilizing shallower depth hybrid steel girders and roadway profile modifications. The design provides a minimum vertical clearance required by the Connecticut Department of Transportation of 16’-3” over I-84. Modifications to the abutments, wing walls, and pier to accommodate the superstructure raising were also part of this project. Staged construction utilizing temporary traffic signals was used to maintain vehicular and pedestrian traffic and bridge supported utilities on Oakwood Avenue and I-84 throughout construction.

The improvements also include lane transitioning, full depth roadway reconstruction, curbing, sidewalk, protective fencing, and concrete driveway ramps.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration funded this project. This project was completed in the spring of 2016.
