Weston & Sampson recently received a provisional patent on a cutting-edge stormwater management device known as “the Buoyancy Controlled Surge Protection Device.” This cutting-edge device prevents climate change-influenced sea level rise from backflowing into a storm drainage system robbing valuable stormwater storage capacity and creating flooding. This is important for outfalls that are adjacent to rivers, saltwater creeks, or marshes, where higher than usual flood levels or storm surges can flow backwards into stormwater systems. These types of backflows can be detrimental not only for water quality and habitat impacts but also because inland flooding can be accelerated.
