Interdisciplinary Services for UMass Lowell Sports Complex

East Campus Recreation Field - Aiken Street

Following the demolition of a commercial building, and exhaustive soils remediation efforts at this property by our environmental services team, our sports + recreation team developed comprehensive plans for a two field multi-use sports complex. Fields are constructed of synthetic rubber infill, and support a wide range of club sports and recreational leagues. Our designers worked with a full array of university staff representing capital planning, facilities and operations, construction and sports and recreation departments.
Weston & Sampson provided survey, permitting, stormwater management design and modeling, schematic, preliminary and final design, value engineering, bid assistance and construction administration/oversight. The approximately $5M complex includes regulation sized fields supporting soccer, lacrosse, rugby, field hockey, football and other uses. Facilities and site features include an arrival plaza and cuing area, perimeter wall, fence and netting systems, lighting, scoreboards, seating, signage, extensive perimeter landscaping, operations and maintenance support building.
Our design team worked closely with the university to develop an attractive and compelling site aesthetic that was in keeping with other recent project developments within the UMass Lowell East Campus vicinity. As a result, the property feels well integrated with the surroundings and it now forms an important gateway as students and visitors travel across the historic northern canal just north of downtown Lowell.
