Unidirectional Flushing

UDF Programs for Small and Large Municipalities

Weston & Sampson has extensive experience in preparing unidirectional flushing (UDF) programs for municipal water systems, both small and large. Typically, a municipality’s water quality is very good when it leaves the source; however, well-managed UDF programs are a key aspect of maintaining good water quality in the distribution system. UDF programs are of particular importance for municipalities that have unlined cast iron pipes with tuberculation, which can cause water discoloration and reduce system disinfectant residual.

Our engineers plan, design, and implement UDF programs. UDF helps to remove sediment and contaminants in water mains, and improve water quality. Compared to standard flushing procedures, UDF involves operating distribution system hydrants and valves to isolate flushing flows through specific mains.

Weston & Sampson can also implement UDF programs in the field, and can continue to provide technical support and update the UDF program as a municipality’s distribution system expands or changes. VDF implementation capabilities include:

  • Developing iPad® (iDataCollect SM ) forms
  • Organizing field crews
  • Developing standard operating procedures
  • Conducting field training
