Mary Ellen Welch Greenway
Urban Greenway Plan with Stormwater BMPs & Pedestrian Access
Weston & Sampson is working with the Boston Parks & Recreation Department (BPRD) to provide landscape design, permitting, and civil engineering services for city-owned areas of the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway along Marginal Street in East Boston.
Project objectives include mitigating flooding on lower lying path segments, improving the health of existing vegetation, and expanding the city’s urban forest through the addition of native and naturalized vegetation. Our team evaluated the existing stormwater infrastructure and assessed strategies to mitigate the urban heat island effect by providing cooling zones along the greenway. Coupled with stormwater infrastructure improvements, this project would extend the site’s use during storm events and provide areas for the treatment of stormwater. Our design incorporates seating areas, surfacing, landscaping, signage/wayfinding, and other path amenities. We also created relevant maps and diagrams of the project area, renderings/perspectives to illustrate greenway concept plans, and cross-section drawings.
