Chatham Transfer Station Modification Design

Weston & Sampson is advancing a $7M+ multi-phase upgrade to the Chatham Transfer Station to improve operations, safety, recycling performance, and long-term site functionality.

The project includes reconfiguring the existing transfer station building for commercial recyclables drop-off and compaction, expanding the residential drop-off area, and adding spaces for composting, swap shop operations, and difficult-to-manage wastes.

To guide the design, Weston & Sampson evaluated local and regional solid waste and recycling programs, assessed market conditions, and identified opportunities to strengthen materials management in Chatham and across Barnstable County. The team also reviewed the facility for ADA and OSHA compliance and incorporated improvements to accessibility and worker and public safety.

Weston & Sampson is responsible for Phases 1, 2, and 3 of the transfer station improvements. Phase 2, completed in 2025, included a new 3,500-square-foot prefabricated maintenance building with multi-bay vehicle storage, staff support spaces, and offices. Final design for Phases 1 and 3 is underway.
