Arlington Reservoir Dam Rehabilitation & Permitting

Structural Dam Rehab with Hydrologic Modeling & Environmental Review

Weston & Sampson was selected to inspect the Arlington Reservoir Dam, conduct engineering analyses to assess structural and hydraulic conditions, design repairs, and prepare an EAP for the structure and downstream area.

After residents who use the dam for recreation objected to planned tree removal, our team identified a unique solution based on a project designed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in Minnesota. We designed a vertical interlocking steel sheet pile wall with a reinforced concrete cap for installation along the dam crest. This “I-Wall” allowed the majority of trees to remain while providing protection from dam breach and control of seepage through the embankments. This project was the first of its kind using this approach in Massachusetts.
