Arts & Community Center | James Island SC

Weston & Sampson, along with Ferrara Buist Contractors, is designing and constructing the Town of James Island’s new Arts and Community Center, which will serve as a central gathering place for residents and visitors.

The new Arts and Community Center will be located adjacent to town hall and consists of three buildings connected by outdoor learning and activity spaces, totaling approximately 10,250 square feet. The design will complement the existing town hall architecture and include a standing seam metal roof, horizontal cement board siding, split-face CMU, wood framing, and pre-engineered wood trusses.

The project comprises an administration building, a classroom building, and a performance/event building. Site work provides drive access, parking, and utility connections.

– The administration building will offer private offices, public computer stations, meeting space, an indoor/outdoor community room, and an outdoor classroom. The building also includes a shower facility for use by town staff during emergency operation.
– The classroom building includes two multi-functional classrooms, a kiln room, and a large storage closet. The classrooms support activities such as gardening, flower arranging, art classes, pottery, and mindfulness programs like yoga.
– The performance/event building features a performance space with a stage, a backstage area with dressing rooms, prop storage, and private restrooms. Designed as a rental venue for private events, this building also includes a warming kitchen. The building also includes a large, multi-functional lobby that houses the facility’s main restrooms.

Each of the three buildings also incorporates essential support spaces such as restrooms, janitorial closets, electrical closets, and storage areas.
