Beaufort Memorial Hospital Oil Spill Evaluation

Emergency Oil Spill Response for Coastal Healthcare Campus

Weston & Sampson was selected to evaluate emergency response actions following the release of oil from a boiler room into a storm drain at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina.

The oil migrated into the tidal river and salt marsh. A contractor responded and provided initial response actions, including cleaning out pipes and the placement of booms around the spill in the river. Our team evaluated initial response actions in coordination with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and the US Coast Guard on behalf of Memorial Hospital. We visited the site and evaluated ongoing response actions, along with costs submitted to-date, and provided recommendations regarding the validity of response actions, required and prudent response actions, and a pathway to site closure. We recommended removal of the booms as coastal cleanup was complete and provided a final report to the client for submittal to DHEC.
