Boston, MA Moakley Park Master Plan
Master Plan for Climate-Resilient Urban Park & Shoreline
Weston & Sampson supported the Boston Parks and Recreation Department in advancing the climate-resilient transformation of Moakley Park, a 60-acre waterfront space increasingly vulnerable to flooding.
As a subconsultant to Stoss Landscape Urbanism, Weston & Sampson helped secure an MVP Action Grant and developed design storm projections to assess future flood risks. Collaborating with Nitsch Engineering, BWSC, and MWRA, our team created a 2-D stormwater flood model and evaluated infrastructure impacts. The resulting design integrates a vegetated flood barrier, green infrastructure, and features to mitigate extreme heat. Our team now leads the design and implementation of Phase 1, covering 14 acres and including flood protection, community plazas, recreational amenities, and an operations building. Drawing from subsurface analyses, the team minimized infrastructure impact while incorporating climate projections into the design. This work ensures Moakley Park becomes a resilient, inclusive, and multi-functional open space for future generations.
