Brevator Street Streetscape Improvements
The City of Albany selected Weston & Sampson to reconfigure Brevator Street to improve quality of life by creating a narrow, residential-scale street with pedestrian, bicycle, mass transit, and vehicular accommodations.
A minor arterial, Brevator Street is an important transportation connection between Western and Washington Avenues. The Harriman State Office Campus, NYS Route 85, Rosemont Park, and Brevator Firehouse are key landmarks along the road, which is adjacent to an expansive residential neighborhood. Our team provided public outreach, landscape architecture, engineering, and construction inspection services to improve the existing roadway. To develop a Complete Street corridor within the existing community fabric, we reimagined the existing motor vehicle-dominated roadway configuration. As part of this project, we eliminated the expansively wide concrete roadway and narrowed the existing travel way, installed dedicated pedestrian and bicycle paths, and improved/updated existing streetscape amenities, including street trees, lighting, green stormwater infrastructure, site furnishings, pedestrian safety, and pedestrian accessibility.
