Kiawah Island, SC Model Rain Garden
Community Rain Garden with Stakeholder Design Workshop
Weston & Sampson collaborated with Kiawah Conservancy, the Town of Kiawah Island, and Clemson University Cooperative Extension to design a model rain garden for the town.
Rain gardens help manage stormwater and protect clean water by intercepting stormwater runoff as it travels from its source (e.g., a rooftop or paved surface) to its destination (e.g., ditch, pond, or local water body). We sited and designed two rain gardens in community spaces, one at the Kiawah Island Town Hall and one at the Rhett’s Bluff boat landing, as a demonstration project for people who want to learn more about the practice. Our innovative approach incorporated site assessment, design, installation, and community engagement. We provided concept drawings for use in the community engagement program and engineered drawings required for practice approval.
