Maskwonicut Street Bridge over AMTRAK/MBTA Rail
Rail-Overpass Bridge Replacement with Geotech & Drainage Design
As part of our master services agreement with MassDOT, Weston & Sampson provided design and construction engineering services for the replacement of the single-span bridge that carries Maskwonicut Street over the MBTA/Amtrak northeast corridor railroad tracks in Sharon, Massachusetts.
Our design included a new 54.5-foot single-span steel girder bridge with precast concrete deck superstructure and concrete bridge rails with an electrification barrier, as well as raising the roadway profile to accommodate the superstructure depth and increase the vertical clearance to the tracks below. Project challenges included limited construction time to accommodate travel on the rail lines, preservation of the existing stone masonry arch culvert eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and residential houses adjacent to the existing structure on either side. We provided services related to utility relocation, coordination with Amtrak and MBTA, geotechnical tasks, environmental permitting, and public engagement.
