Multi-Modal Transportation Improvements to Broadway

Complete Streets Upgrades with Bike Infrastructure & Road Diet

The City of Cambridge hired Weston & Sampson to design and implement multi-modal transportation improvements to address traffic, safety, and operational deficiencies between First and Ames Streets in Kendall Square.

After an in-depth traffic study, we developed a design strategy that allowed for the inclusion of five-foot wide bicycle lanes, turning lanes, an expanded lane for taxi queuing, and a bus pull-in in front of the Marriott Hotel. Our team prioritized pedestrian circulation using grading-level crossings at driveways and alignment of the mid-block crosswalk perpendicular to the flow of vehicular travel. The entire streetscape was upgraded with grassed lawn areas, brick pads for bench seating, low-maintenance ground cover beds, tree plantings, and mini rain gardens for drainage. All pedestrian areas were designed and constructed based on stringent ADA standards for accessibility.
