New Rochester DPW Facility

Planning and designing a modern public works facility that supports municipal operations, fleet maintenance, and long-term sustainability.

Weston & Sampson prepared a feasibility study and site selection analysis for a new public works facility in Rochester.

Work included preparing a space needs assessment for the Department of Public Works (DPW) operations and conducting a comprehensive site selection analysis to identify a preferred site for the facility. Based on the results, the city selected and purchased a preferred site to support the new facility, and we assisted with obtaining city approvals to fund its design and construction.

The approximately 55,000-SF facility includes administration and engineering work areas, public counter, office support space, employee facilities (locker/shower/restroom/break and training), trade shops, vehicle maintenance, vehicle wash, and vehicle and equipment storage areas. The vehicle maintenance design includes a new lubrication distribution system, vehicle exhaust capture system, a materials lift-up to mezzanine storage, and two state-of-the-art heavy-duty 105,000-pound modular three post in-ground lifts. The lifts are sized to accommodate the city’s diverse fleet of vehicles that includes buses, fire trucks, and construction equipment.

The project also includes a new salt shed, city-wide fueling facility, and bulk material storage area. The facility incorporates sustainable design elements including natural daylighting, heat recovery, high-efficiency radiant floor and ceiling mounted infrared heating system, smart lighting controls, high-efficiency cooling systems, and a solar-ready roof.
