Riverwalk Retaining Wall Replacement

Historic Retaining Wall Replacement with Structural Design

Weston & Sampson was retained by the City of Biddeford, Maine, to complete design, permitting, and FEMA support services for replacement of the riverwalk retaining wall along Saco River, as well as construction support and resident engineering services.

After a section of the retaining wall failed during heavy rainfall, our team completed an evaluation of the existing site, retaining wall, and structure conditions, subsurface explorations, topographic survey, environmental assessment, permitting, and engineering evaluation and design of retaining wall replacement. Our evaluations indicated that using a soldier pile and lagging retaining wall would be the most cost-effective replacement approach. Lagging will be comprised of precast concrete panels with a veneer finish to aesthetically blend with surrounding historic structures.
