Westerly Route One Corridor Study

Corridor Study for Multimodal Access & Commercial Redevelopment

Weston & Sampson conducted a study of the five-mile stretch of Route One that serves as a primary travel and commercial corridor in the Town of Westerly, located on the southern coast of Rhode Island.

The town had identified the Route One corridor in their updated comprehensive plan as lacking community character and charm. Our team analyzed the built and economic conditions to determine strategies to revitalize existing development and provide opportunities for new development. We helped conduct a robust public engagement program, using surveys, websites, flyers, posters, and stakeholder meetings to inform the public on critical planning issues and provide opportunities for continuous public feedback. The Route One corridor is the town’s primary commercial area and uses along the corridor range from big box retail, dated strip mall development, and small businesses to residential housing. The town identified the Route One area in their recently updated comprehensive plan as lacking community character. Our team analyzed the existing built and economic conditions along the corridor to determine strategies to revitalize existing development and provide opportunities for new development. Public engagement includes community-wide discussion, using surveys, websites, flyers, posters, and stakeholder meetings to inform the public on critical planning issues, and provide opportunities for continuous public feedback.
