Boston Centers for Youth & Families Clougherty Pool

Weston & Sampson worked with the Boston Facilities Department to redesign the BCYF Clougherty outdoor swimming pool in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

Project goals included the creation of an amenity pool deck and a second-floor roof terrace. Using a combination of paving types and colors, spatial zones were created around the pool that offer flexible gathering opportunities. Selecting lighter color pavers also helps combat the effects of Urban Heat Island by reflecting the sun’s rays rather than absorb it. Fixed and movable seating provide places of respite, and a custom designed shade shelter, along with tensile shades over the existing bleacher seating gives visitors shelter from the sun.

Our team emphasized views of the Mystic River through carefully located planters that bring color, texture, and soften the edges of the pool deck. Public engagement was a key project component and significantly helped our team understand the local community’s wants and needs
