Capital Improvements Plan Update
Water Distribution CIP Planning with GIS & Cost Projections
Weston & Sampson provided a new updated Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) for the Dedham-Westwood Water District (DWWD) in Massachusetts.
Our team developed a plan to help DWWD prioritize distribution system improvements, with immediate improvements to be made over five years and remaining improvements over 20 years. We imported data from the existing GIS into modeling software to reflect recent system improvements and display pipe characteristics. We reviewed the pipes and assigned values based on the pipe material and age. Our team projected water demands for the future and compared them to the current system capacity. We then used the model to evaluate system pressures, fire flows, capacity, and redundancy. Final recommendations included a map, color-coded from the GIS to represent the type of improvement. We also prepared a list to show the lengths of pipe to be retained, abandoned, replaced, installed, or looped for improved water quality, as well as estimated costs. Other aspects included a preliminary evaluation to replace an aged tank, including a list of possible tank sites and design implications for each.
