Catawba River Water Treatment Plant Upgrades

Water Plant Expansion with Ultrafiltration & SBR Optimization

Weston & Sampson designed modifications to the 36-mgd Catawba River Water Treatment Plant (WTP), owned by Lancaster County Water and Sewer District, South Carolina and Union County, North Carolina.

The 36- mgd SuperPulsators were converted to Ultra Pulsators , which increased the capacity of the clarification system to 42 mgd. The conversion to UltraPulsators required modifications to several systems within the pulsator including the inlet piping, collection and distribution piping, and upgrades to the vacuum chamber. The upgrade to the UltraPulsator resulted in substantial improvement in the clarified water quality as well as the WTP’s ability to change flow rates without upsets to the pulsator. The project also included the design and construction of a new primary flash mix designed for 56 mgd that met the hydraulic needs of the membrane system. Our team also designed the 100-mgd raw water intake and pump station, two dedicated finished water pump stations, and Clearwell storage.
