Colony North Pointe Gymnasium

Stormwater-Managed Landscape Design for Community Gym

Weston & Sampson, a subconsultant to CPL, is providing landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the construction of a new gymnasium and park in Columbia, South Carolina.

The new facility will offer walkable access to a socially vulnerable community with previously limited access to parks and recreation amenities within walking distance. Project goals include establishing an accessible destination for multi-generational community gathering and connection, healthy activity, and active and passive recreation; promoting the protection and enjoyment of the natural environment. Once complete, the project will feature a 15,000-SF recreation and community center, meadow and habitat restoration, community garden, splash pad, multipurpose lawn, and walking trails. With the recreation area’s location in an impaired watershed, the stormwater design prioritizes water quality by implementing nature-based solutions including bioswales, constructed wetlands, and rain gardens. The project will also establish a new pedestrian connection to an existing baseball field that is land-locked by private property.
