Fallon Field

Community-Driven Park Renovation with Inclusive Play Equipment

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department (BPRD) selected Weston & Sampson to plan, design, and implement meaningful playground improvements at Fallon Field in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts.

Our team collaborated with the BPRD and residents in an effort to bring accessible, state-of-the-art playground features to an area that has been characterized as a “play desert” by Roslindale Wants to Play!, a grassroots neighborhood organization. Residents desired a challenging and inspiring playground design that would push the boundaries of play and create a truly unique and exciting alternative to a typical playground. The final master plan leverages the dramatic elevation changes across the site to include a 30-foot-high rope climbing structure that accesses a 38-foot slide, group swing, splash pad, and a playhouse. Custom elements include a concrete “scramble,” vertical steel posts and gateways, and terraced seating for caregivers. Once open, the park was featured in Architectural Digest’s “The Rise of Risky Play.”
