George Robert White Fountain Restoration
Granite Fountain Restoration with Recirculation System
The Friends of the Public Garden selected Weston & Sampson to restore the mechanical function of the George Robert White Memorial Fountain at the Public Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
Originally constructed in 1924 and out of operation for three decades, the memorial consists of bronze sculptural elements designed by Daniel Chester French, set atop a granite pedestal and fountain basin. Our landscape architecture team coordinated the fountain restoration efforts with multiple project stakeholders. Our structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering teams contributed to the design of a large below-ground chamber containing fountain recirculation and treatment systems and the design of water leveling and fountain drainage protocols. The full range of improvements included replacing the highly specialized fountain basin surface consisting of a rounded stone embedded into a concrete setting bed, repointing all granite elements, cleaning and repointing a stone-embedded concrete plaza, adding new site furnishings, and restoring the surrounding landscape.
