Harambee Park
Multi-Phase Park Plan with Athletic Fields & Stormwater Features
Weston & Sampson provided master planning and phased design implementation services at Harambee Park in Dorchester, Massachusetts, one of Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s (BPRD’s) largest open space assets.
Phase I included a universally accessible landform play area with a bridge and tower structure, embankment slides, climbing nets, splash pad water features, and swings. Other amenities included two new basketball courts with LED lighting, a workout area, seating, and lighting on pedestrian pathways. Phase II included two new, multi-use rectangular fields with irrigation and spectator seating, an informal amphitheater and stage area, and an interior walking loop. A critical project element of this phase involved improving stormwater management due to existing topography and an emergency overflow outfall structure managed by the Boston Water and Sewer Commission. Phase III included two new football fields with bleachers, a cheerleading practice area, workout nodes, lighted pathways, parking, and stormwater management. Phase IV involves the design and construction of cricket fields, pathway improvements, 41 new trees, field and path lighting, and site improvements.
