Indian Land WWTP Upgrade

Expanding wastewater treatment capacity to support rapid regional growth while preparing for future demand and regulatory requirements.

The Indian Land Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was originally designed by Weston & Sampson staff as a 1.2-MGD facility.

The area served by the WWTP includes the panhandle area of Lancaster County, South Carolina and is bordered by Union County and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina as well as York County, South Carolina. The extreme growth experienced in these areas resulted in the rapid expansion of this WWTP. Lancaster County Water & Sewer District (LCWSD) selected Weston & Sampson for this WWTP upgrade.

The upgraded design involved expansion to 5 MGD, including an SBR treatment process. Our team also upgraded the influent pumping, headworks, tertiary filtration, and UV disinfection, followed by post aeration prior to the discharge. We designed the process to accommodate the current permit requirements for annual loading for Total Phosphorus (TP) and Total Nitrogen (TN). We also designed the downstream treatment process, including the SBR treatment, filters, and UV facilities, to be expanded to 15 MGD to accommodate future growth.

This project also includes new sludge handling facilities. The existing treatment facility was rehabilitated to include a proprietary digestion system that maintains minimal phosphorus discharge. Downstream is a sludge dewatering facility that includes the installation of a new centrifuge with room for a second centrifuge, and a new sludge loading station.
