Naval Education & Training Center Site Assessment

Third-Party PFAS Review for Naval Training Center

Weston & Sampson was selected by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) through its Technical Assistance Contract (TAC) to provide technical review, expert opinion, and negotiations regarding the assessment and remediation of the Newport Naval Yard Superfund Site in Newport, Rhode Island.

More than a dozen Operating Units have been identified as requiring assessment and potential remediation in accordance with EPA and RIDEM regulations. Contaminants of concern include petroleum, chlorinated solvents, PCBs, PAHs, metals, spent munitions, and PFAS. Our team provided expert review and insight of work scopes, remedial plans, and status reports submitted by the Navy associated with each of the Operating Units. Our reports and recommendations inform RIDEM responses and assist in guiding regulatory requirements for site cleanup. We provided input on both small-area and base-wide data collection and responses, along with conceptual site model, remedial design, and proposed operating unit closure.
