Pease Water Treatment Facility

DAF Conversion & GAC Filter Upgrades for PFAS Contaminant Removal

The City of Portsmouth selected Weston & Sampson to assist on multiple fronts as they addressed the impacts of PFAS in groundwater wells at the Pease International Tradeport, located at the former Pease Air Force Base and listed on the US EPA’s National Priorities List (NPL).

After conducting a groundwater monitoring program to help delineate the sources of PFAS contamination, our interdisciplinary team designed and installed temporary granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment, later followed by a new permanent treatment system designed to treat 1,200 gpm from the three wells. Upgrades to the existing treatment facility included 3,800 SF of space to house ion exchange resin and GAC filters, along with a new control room and SCADA system; a raw water booster pump skid; a backwash water recycle system; and more. We provided oversight during construction, which was carefully sequenced to keep the existing system operational and minimize system shutdowns.
