Sheerr Pool Renovation
Modernizing a collegiate competition pool with upgraded aquatic systems, accessibility features, and flexible training infrastructure.
As a subconsultant to KCBA Architects, Weston & Sampson provided aquatic design and engineering services for the renovation of Sheerr Pool, a 50-meter indoor training and competition pool at the University of Pennsylvania.
Our work modernized this collegiate facility with the incorporation of a deck-level stainless steel gutter system to improve wave dissipation and competitive performance. Project efforts also involved the replacement of the existing bulkhead with a state-of-the-art moveable floor utilizing Spiralift technology to support flexible programming. Additional upgrades included new starting platforms and dive stands, a fully integrated timing system with scoreboard and pace clocks, and an accessible pool stair to enhance user access.
The renovation also addressed critical infrastructure and water quality systems to improve long-term performance and efficiency. Scope elements included the complete refurbishment of pool finishes and depth markings, replacement of all piping and equipment, and installation of energy-efficient variable frequency drives (VFDs). This work also involved rehabilitation of the surge tank along with the addition of new filter systems, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, and automatic water level control systems, which resulted in enhanced water clarity, reduced chemical demand, and a modernized, high-performance aquatic environment.
