UMass Lowell

Brownfields Remediation & Site Reuse for Academic Expansion

Weston & Sampson was selected by the University of Massachusetts Lowell to undertake a complex improvement project that included demolition of a post-industrial commercial building, mitigation of contaminated soils, and construction of a multi-use sports and recreation complex for student athletes.

Our team worked with university staff representing the capital planning, facilities and operations, construction, and intramural sports and recreation departments. The finished complex includes multi-use fields, an arrival plaza and cuing area, perimeter wall, fence and netting systems, lighting, seating, signage, extensive perimeter landscaping, and an operations and maintenance support building. We worked closely with the university to develop an attractive and compelling site aesthetic that was in keeping with other recent project developments within the UMass Lowell East Campus vicinity. As a result, the property feels well integrated with the surrounding fabric and forms an important gateway as students and visitors travel across the historic northern canal to arrive at East Campus.
