Arborway Electric Bus Facility

All-Electric Transit Facility Design for MBTA Bus Fleet Modernization

Weston & Sampson is working as a subconsultant to Jacobs on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA)’s Arborway bus maintenance facility, in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts.

Our team’s scope of services includes the following: structural and mechanical design, fleet maintenance and industrial equipment design, plumbing and fire protection design, sustainability and resiliency design, geotechnical assessment/design, and hydrology and hydraulic modeling. The new approximately 950,000-SF, multi-level facility will be the first all-electric bus maintenance facility in Massachusetts and will have the capacity to store and maintain 200 buses with a mix of 40- and 60-foot vehicles. We are incorporating LEED standards and tracking their efforts toward sustainable design elements. The Arborway facility will almost entirely eliminate emissions from buses in Boston’s southern neighborhoods, including some of the lowest income communities in the city. It will also support more reliable bus service along many of the MBTA’s most heavily used routes.
