DPW Facility Improvements & Salt Shed Planning for Operations Growth

Weston & Sampson provided a comprehensive existing conditions assessment and developed a strategic plan for repairs, upgrades, and new construction for the DPW headquarters in Arlington, Massachusetts, a historical site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The solution, which prioritized modernizing the facility while respecting its historical significance, included the design of 69,200 GSF of renovations and new structures, including a 6,000-SF salt shed and a new 43,000-SF building with an indoor vehicle maintenance and storage area, automated vehicle wash bay, and two-story administrative office space. Based on the complexities of the project, including the historical designation and historical contamination, the team opted to use the Construction Management at Risk delivery method, which allowed the development of cost-effective solutions for a complicated site while meeting the operational needs of the DPW. Our team also conducted a comprehensive Fleet Management Evaluation Report resulting in more than 60 site-specific recommendations to optimize fleet operations, while also addressing environmental restrictions and flooding issues.

High-Efficiency MEP Design for Building Electrification and Life Safety Systems

Our MEP engineers designed high-efficiency HVAC systems that provided for the electrification of existing Buildings A and B and the administration wing of the new Building E. Electrical features included LED lighting systems and occupancy sensors, fire alarm, telecommunications, security systems, site lighting and power, and a yard mounted 800 kW diesel generator. Plumbing systems included low-flow fixtures with sensors and high-efficiency, heat pump domestic hot water heating. All buildings are fully equipped with dry type sprinkler systems in areas potentially subject to freezing and clean agent protection for the server room.
