Wastewater Pre-Treatment Services
Brewery Pretreatment Design with Regulatory Permitting Assistance
Weston & Sampson was contacted to help Iron Stag Brewing get their construction project off the ground.
While the client was able to obtain most of the building permits necessary, the City of Cranston required a wastewater conditioning system to be built and have that system reviewed and approved before any construction could begin. The cost of this system would significantly impact their capital budget, so our team recommended conducting an alternatives analysis to investigate potential solutions. The alternatives analysis weighed capital versus ongoing costs for a conditioning system and a pump-and-haul system that would temporarily hold process wastewater and dispose of it at a nearby anaerobic digester. The Johnston digester is a facility that takes high-strength wastes such as brewery process wastewater and converts it to electricity. This waste-to-energy approach resulted in low capital costs to the owner and a streamlined approval process from the City. The system was designed to be modular; when production increases in the future it can be retrofitted into a conditioning system that would be more economically practical with higher flows.
